Taiwanese original inhabitants occupy a unique place where a rich heritage of traditional knowledge, practice and belief underpin a dynamic contemporary society. Hidden in Wulai area, the Aboriginal People of Atayal have ensured the survival of their settlement, and indeed, culture. The tour will take you to your indigenous guide who will demonstrate methods used by generations of his/her family to hunt and gather food and tell you the story behind it. Expect to practise what you’ve learned afterward ~ arching your bow and how to aim your arrow correctly, developing your tracking skills, and eventually preparing your animal trap properly.
The Atayal are one of the few tribes in Taiwan that practise the art of facial tattooing. Facial tattooing is a significant rite of passage in this tribe where it is used as a means to differentiate between ethnicities and as an indicator of one’s place within the tribe. You will be invited to partake in this rare and amazing practice, although by all means the traditional inking methods won’t be used and the option of hand-drawn, skin-friendly, and washable paints are available instead. You will be revived after plenty of activities with lively Indigenous meal, prepared carefully using specific spices unique to the Indigenous communities, called Maqau.
In the early 1990s, the textile craftsmanship and unique Indigenous patterns were considered a lost legacy, and only a few old people still produced woven products. Fortunately a small group of volunteers managed to keep the weaving tradition alive and the tour will provide you with the opportunities to get your hand at weaving your very own personal souvenir to bring home. An opportunity not to be missed!
